Which division of the autonomic nervous system is also known as the thoracolumbar division quizlet?

Ultimately sympathetic postganglionic fibers innervate organs of the head and ventral body cavity including; dilator muscle of the iris of the eye, blood vessels of the face, and nasal & salivary glands; the heart, aorta, lungs, esophagus, & thyroid gland; the glands & arrestor pili muscles of the skin; liver, stomach, pancreas, spleen, intestines, rectum, kidneys, bladder, genital organs. Increased sympathetic outflow of these organs inhibits activity.

There are two major classes of adrenergic receptors: alpha and beta. These receptors are further divided into subclasses (alpha 1 and 2; beta 1,2, and 3) Organs that respond to NE (or to epinephrine) have one or more of these receptor types. NE or epinephrine can either be excitatory or inhibitory depending on which subclass of receptor predominates in the target organ.

ALPHA:
1: located in blood vessels serving the skin, mucosa, abdominal viscera, kidneys, salivary glands, virtually all sympathetic effectors except the heart; generally excitatory
2: located in some vascular smooth muscle, on blood platelets, and on beta cells & acing cells of the pancreas; effect is generally inhibitory

BETA:
1: located in cardiac muscle and various other sites, effect is excitatory
2: found in smooth muscle in walls of blood vessels, respiratory passages, digestive tract, the bladder, and urinary passages; NE binding is inhibitory--> relaxation of smooth muscle
3: in adipose tissue; effect is to stimulate lipolysis

sympathetic nervous system

Thoracolumbar Division
a set of nerves that prepares the body for action in challenging or threatening situations
Exercise
Excitement - respond to danger
"Fight or flight"
Mobilize energy stores
Dilated pupils, 14 bronchides
High heart rate high blood pressure
Low GI function
High blood to skin to heart

parasympathetic nervous system

Craniosacral divison " Rest and Digest"
the division of the autonomic nervous system that calms the body, conserving its energy
Routine maintenance
Conserving energy
Low - normal heart rate & blood pressure
"Housekeeping"
Digestion
Elimination
Carried by cranial nerves and sacral spinal nerves

Peripheral Nervous Sytem

extension of CNS into the body
Forms nerves
Cranial nerves 12 pairs
Attached to brain
Spinal nerves 31 pairs
Attached to spinal cord
Cervical plexus
Brachial plexus
Lumbar plexus
Sacral plexus

Somatic Nervous System

Somatic Efferents: Innervates skeletal muscle
Somatic Afferents: Sensation from skin

Autonomic Nervous System

Visceral Efferents: Innervates smooth and cardiac muscle and glands
Visceral Afferent: Sensation from these regions
Divided into Parasympathetic & Sympathetic

Central Nervous System

Brain and spinal cord
Composed of gray matter & white matter
Gray matter: cell bodies of neurons and neuroglial cells. A collection of cell bodies called nuclei (in PNS they are called ganglia)
White matter: myelinated axons of neurons and neuroglial cells. A collection of axons are often called tracts ( PNS=a collection of axons are called nerves)
Covered by membranes called the meninges
Contain fluid-filled chambers called the ventricular system

why is the sympathetic is also called the thoracolumbar division

Sympathetic fibers have their reflex centers in the spinal cord, T1 to L2, so the sympathetic nervous system is sometimes called thoracolumbar division

why is the parasympathetic nervous system also called the craniosacral division

The parasympathetic division is also called the craniosacral division because its preganglionic neurons are housed within the nuclei in the brainstem and within the lateral gray matter of the S2-S4 spinal cord segments.

Which division of the autonomic nervous system is also known as the thoracolumbar division?

The sympathetic nervous system is part of the autonomic nervous system, along with its counterpart, parasympathetic nervous system. The origin of the sympathetic nervous system is found within the thoracic and lumbar segments of the spinal cord also known as the thoracolumbar division (T1 to L2,3).

Which is also called the thoracolumbar nervous system quizlet?

The sympathetic system is also called the thoracolumbar division because this division contains preganglionic fibers from the thoracic and upper lumbar segments of the spinal cord, in the lateral gray horns. Name four types of ganglia found in the sympathetic division and what they control.

Is the parasympathetic division also called the thoracolumbar division?

The sympathetic division is also called the thoracolumbar division because the preganglionic neurons are located along the spinal cord from segments T1 to L 2, basically in the middle section of the length of the spinal cord.

Is parasympathetic craniosacral and thoracolumbar?

Because of its location, the parasympathetic system is commonly referred to as having craniosacral outflow, in contrast to the sympathetic nervous system, which is said to have thoracolumbar outflow.
