In his brief, non-canon history in Dragon Ball Z, Cooler has always somehow been one step ahead of and one step behind his brother Frieza. Each of his movie appearances portrayed him as a more powerful opponent than Frieza. And just like his brother, Cooler has powered up via transformations, lost to Goku, failed to conquer Namek, returned as a cyborg, then lost again.

He can fail at anything Frieza fails at, but he does it cooler. It does, however, raise the question: If Cooler can do everything Frieza can do, does that mean he could achieve a Golden Form as well?

Cooler, brother of Frieza in Dragon Ball Z

Aside from being canon, the only thing Frieza has done so far that Cooler hasn't is achieve the Golden Form. Though the evil siblings are said to be unusually powerful for their race, Frieza has always been hailed as the true prodigy -- which he demonstrated by only needing a couple of months to catch up with decades of training for Goku and Vegeta. This may just be from lack of opportunity, considering Cooler can't exactly train in Hell. It's unknown how powerful Cooler could become if he were able to train.

After the success of reimagining and canonizing Broly, Dragon Ball has confirmed that fans are open to the return of iconic villains from DBZ's past. However, bringing back Cooler just to resume his following in Frieza's footsteps would be a waste of his potential. It's a problem that's plagued Vegeta's and Goku's relationship until only recently in the Dragon Ball Super manga. So a more appropriate question might be, rather than could Cooler achieve a Golden form, should he?

The line between fan service and character development can be difficult to toe. Dragon Ball has so many fans that it's difficult to say what fan service even is anymore in this franchise. Part of the problem with Cooler is his long history of doing things Frieza has already done. It would be challenging to give him a Golden Form without it feeling like diving back into old habits that have made him a bit of a punchline. Seeing Cooler in a Golden Form would certainly be visually compelling, but it would also highlight, in gold, everything that is wrong with the character.

However, the question of whether or not Cooler is capable of the Golden Form is difficult to answer. If going by whether it's canon, then no, he is not, because canonically he does not even exist. The argument could be made that he is canon thanks to a cameo in Dragon Ball GT, but whether or not GT itself is canon has never been confirmed. The vast expanse of Dragon Ball non-canon material rivals that of the actual canon, making hypotheticals such as this pretty perplexing.

Since Cooler is a strictly non-canon character, the question posed requires the non-canon answer, which is yes. During the Prison Planet Saga of Super Dragon Ball Heroes, Cooler displays the ability to transform into a golden state like Frieza's. In a hilarious lack of history and awareness that almost feels like satire, he proudly declares that if Frieza can do it, so can he.

Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball continues to break records and entertain fans with a legacy that’s lasted nearly 40 years. There are hundreds of hours of Dragon Ball content to enjoy and there’s still no end in sight for the series as it continues to regularly release new manga chapters and feature films.

The latest events in the Dragon Ball Super manga have brought Frieza back in a major way and some fans have speculated that this could lead to the introduction of Cooler, Frieza’s brother. Cooler is one of the more popular villains to come out of the Dragon Ball Z movies, but he’s yet to make a proper canonical appearance. Cooler’s return opens Dragon Ball up to some exciting possibilities.

9/9 It's A Natural Response To The Recent Black Frieza Reveal

Black Frieza reveals himself in Dragon Ball Super manga

Frieza has managed to quietly, and sometimes not so quietly, plot his revenge in the background of Dragon Ball. However, the character’s greatest coup has recently occurred in Dragon Ball Super’s manga where he proceeds to not only eliminate Gas, but also show off his vastly superior new form, Black Frieza.

The chapter ends on a foreboding note, yet one that indicates Frieza’s set to have an increased role and might even be the next big villain. This is the perfect occasion to bring Cooler (and also King Cold) into play, either as Frieza’s allies or adversarial individuals who are jealous of his new strength.

8/9 Dragon Ball Has Already Made Previous Movie Villain, Broly, Canon

Broly Powers Up On Beerus' Planet In Dragon Ball Super Super Hero Movie

Another factor that leans towards the canonical incorporation of Cooler into the series is that Dragon Ball Super took a similar approach not too long ago with Legendary Super Saiyan, Broly.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly intentionally brings a former Dragon Ball Z movie villain into the canon and it’d be unusual if the series didn’t continue to do this with other villains. There are two Dragon Ball Z movies devoted to Cooler and he’s the next most popular movie villain behind Broly. All of this aligns with the character’s return.

7/9 There's The Opportunity For A Showdown With Gohan Beast And Orange Piccolo

Gohan Beast releases Special Beam Cannon on Cell Max in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.

Cooler is a satisfying antagonist in his two movie appearances, but they don’t provide a proper representation of Dragon Ball’s eclectic cast of characters. Cooler really only faces off against Goku and Vegeta, which is par for the course when it comes to Dragon Ball Z movies, but not necessarily conducive to the most exciting showdowns.

6/9 Cooler Can Now Experience Ultra Instinct And Ultra Ego Strength

Super Saiyan Goku kicks Metal Cooler in Dragon Ball Z

A hurdle that Dragon Ball has occasionally faced is that it turns to a rewarding idea too early in its run, which can ultimately limit its potential. Goku and Vegeta’s fight against Cooler is exciting, but it occurs at a point in the franchise where Super Saiyan 2 strength isn’t even in consideration.

Goku, Vegeta, and the rest of Dragon Ball’s characters have made staggering progress over the years and in some cases they barely even resemble their former selves. Cooler’s return offers the possibility for him to face Ultra Instinct Goku and Ultra Ego Vegeta, which would lead to a completely different dynamic than their previous encounter.

5/9 It Allows For Frost To Play An Important Role

Frost acts proud in front of Goku in Dragon Ball Super

Dragon Ball Super drastically expands the series’ scope with the introduction of a multiverse that’s full of powerful warriors. The heroes learn that Universe 6 is tied to the series’ prime universe, which means that some of its individuals come across as mirror versions of the Universe 7 crew.

Universe 6 has Frost instead of Frieza, a character who turns out to be ultimately just as evil as his Universe 7 counterpart. Frost hasn’t amounted to much in the series, but Cooler’s emergence could justify a return, whether as someone Universe 7 enlists to defeat Cooler or as an ally that Cooler acquires during his fight against Frieza.

4/9 He Can Become An Ally

Cooler shows off his fifth form in Dragon Ball

Black Frieza's reveal has most audiences contemplating Cooler’s return, but it’s a curious development that could lead to the character being used in a completely different capacity. Rather than feature Cooler as a villain, it’s possible that the heroes recruit him as an unlikely ally that can help them defeat Black Frieza.

Dragon Ball Super has slowly turned Broly into a hero and so it’s not impossible to see the same approach taken with Cooler. It’s likely that Frieza’s days of random betrayals are far from over and having Cooler as a dedicated teammate helps balance the scales.

3/9 Cooler's Multiversal Self Could Emerge

Dragon Ball Super has gone on to explore some exciting ideas through its recent multiverse component, including the Tournament of Power battle royale. Alternate universes occasionally contain mirror versions of characters, which could lead to some rewarding developments in Cooler's case.

Dragon Ball Super might make Cooler only exist in Universe 6 and become a problem that the Universe 7 lot need to help handle. Alternatively, Universe 6 could contain a kindhearted version of Cooler that takes on the evil version from Universe 7.

2/9 Fusion Didn't Exist Last Time

Gogeta performs dramatic finish in Dragon Ball FighterZ Game

Fusion is an increasingly popular tactic that’s turned to in Dragon Ball. There’s an obvious appeal in the possibility of combining two characters together into a fused fighter with improved strength. Fusion wasn’t on anyone’s radar during Cooler’s past appearance, which opens itself to some fresh ideas.

Cooler could experience Gogeta or Vegito for the first time, but there’s also the chance that Cooler fuses with Frieza, or Frost, to reach newly intimidating heights. New transformations for Frieza and Cooler can only go so far and fusion is something genuinely different for them to experience.

1/9 He Can Gain New Transformations

Golden Cooler attacks in Dragon Ball Super Heroes

Cooler’s debut in the Dragon Ball Z movies attempted to push the character even further than Frieza through the addition of an extra transformation level. Dragon Ball video games and promotional anime have even included Golden Cooler as a fun combination of both characters’ assets.

There’s been even greater growth on both fronts in the meantime and Cooler’s appearance could open itself up to the possibility of Black Cooler, or Frieza might even finally adopt Cooler’s fifth form. It’d be extremely satisfying to see the spectacle of a Meta-Cooler army face Black Frieza’s massive armed forces in a destructive free-for-all.
