TV and its advertisements/programmes created a 'national culture' even more than radio did

-Advertising was a big part of television right from the start
-Early advertisements and programmes showed very few black Americans (the first TV advert with a black American wasn't until 1963)

With the post-war baby boom, the advertisements targeted the growing number of children

-Goods began to be sold using special offers related to popular television series (encouraging children to ask their mothers to buy a cereal that had coupons to collect, for a gift that was related to the Lone Ranger television series, for example)

Political parties quickly saw that they could use television too and bought air time for their politicians

-Eisenhower used television air time in his 1952 campaign for the presidency
-Kennedy also consciously exploited it as a politician
-Television meant that Americans could see their politicians in action
-This worked very well for Kennedy, who was good looking and a persuasive speaker
-It worked less well for Nixon, who was uncomfortable on air

The Kennedy-Nixon Debates, 1960

-1960, CBS aired a series of debates between the two presidential candidates, Kennedy and Nixon
-There were 4 debates
-The first debate reached a record audience of about 70 million people
-These debates were one of the reasons why Nixon became more wary of the media when he did become president
-Kennedy looked better and spoke more confidently so he seemed more in control
-Kennedy won the first debate and the election

Some historians think that the televised debate was what made people vote for Kennedy:

-A poll of people who watched the show on television, taken just after the show, thought Kennedy was more impressive.
-A poll of radio listeners, take at the same time, suggested Nixon had won, so appearance probably was a significant factor.

How was television developed so quickly?

-Recording techniques improved
-Broadcasts aired for longer each day and there were more channels and shows
-People could, and did, watch more and more television
-Television companies could also show re-runs of favourite shows
-1953, 80% of TV was recorded live and by 1960, it was 36%
-By 1970, news and sport were almost the only programmes shown live

Why were standards on commercial television criticised in late 1960s?

They were especially criticised by conservative and religious groups as they disliked the way that many series glamourised crime and violence -There was also criticism of the way that programmes were manipulated: for example, quiz shows were accused of telling contestants the answers to questions beforehand (public wanted programmes to be straight with them)
