Due to differences in the syllable systems of Japanese and English, Japanese EFL learners often exhibit a distinctive accent due to the addition of vowel sounds creating extra syllables in English words. With its focus on the number of syllables used, formal haiku is a potential resource for consciousness raising activities aimed at reducing this accent. In this study video clips of student discourse were analysed in order to determine the effect that studying and writing original haiku has on the number of extra syllables in unplanned speech. Post test videos show a statistically significant reduction in the rate of words pronounced with extra syllables (errors per 10 words spoken).

The ultimate goal for language learners is not to succeed within the classroom but to succeed in the real world. The six projects outlined in this paper explore ways in which to motivate students and equip them with the skills and confidence needed to make the step from the classroom to the world beyond. As well as a discussion of four projects that literally take students out of the classroom, two projects show how the limitations of the classroom can be overcome through utilizing online resources. With a focus on encouraging learners to take an active role in their studies the authors argue that it is the teacher’s job to give learners opportunities that facilitate the move toward independence.

Abstract

Thirty years ago in this journal, Aylett Royall Cox reported on the development of Alphabetic Phonics, a revision of the existing Orton Gillingham treatment for children with dyslexia. This paper continues that discussion and reports on the evolution of that curriculum as it is represented in a comprehensive dyslexia treatment program informed by intervention research. The paper describes the curriculum and reports data from a hospital-based learning disabilities clinic that provides qualified support for treatment efficacy and the value of added comprehension instruction. The results are then discussed in the context of current and future issues in dyslexia intervention.
