Additional Benefits

Residents’ annual salary is $45,000 with a benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision insurance. Residents also receive a 3% employer match and contribution to a 403(b) retirement plan. If you move into a lead teaching role you move onto our lead teaching salary scale that begins at $60,500.

Residents teacher licensure costs, which are approximately $4,500, are covered by KIPP DC. Middle and high school Residents earn a master’s degree in teaching.

Application Process Details

Online Application: Our application is quick! An upload of your resume, unofficial undergraduate transcript, and a few short answer questions. While we have application deadlines outlined below, we encourage applicants to apply early as we fill most of our resident positions in the winter and early spring.

Initial Interview: We’ll connect with you via phone or video (your choice) for a 30-minute interview to learn more about you.

Final Interview Prep Session: We offer a session for all candidates invited to the final interview to give tips and tricks so you ace the interview!

Virtual Final Interview: You’ll submit a performance task and references to confirm your place at the final interview and then get the chance to meet our school leaders virtually.

  • We are looking for residents who will have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution by June 2023, all majors accepted. This residency is for candidates without teaching experience or licensure in DC. Promising applicants are committed to our mission, work well with others, and have a growth mindset. Secondary residents are required to have a 2.75 GPA to be eligible for admission to Relay Graduate School of Education.

  • Residents receive a salary of $45,000. Once Residents move into a Lead Teacher role, they move onto our lead teacher salary scale which starts $60,500. Residents may also join partner public charter schools. 

  • By joining the Capital Teaching Residency, you are committing to teaching for three years in Washington, DC. In their first year, all residents will work and train in a KIPP DC school. In their second and third year, residents can become teachers at KIPP DC or one of our partner public charter schools in DC.

  • We accept applicants from a wide range of past experiences and educational backgrounds. Whether or not you have past experience working with students or studying education, we are looking for applicants who are committed to growing, learning, and providing high quality education to our students.

  • Yes. Each year, approximately two-thirds of residents are placed as primary residents. Primary residents are placed in classrooms with students from prekindergarten through fourth grade in general elementary. The final third are secondary residents in middle and high school classrooms who train in English, math, social studies, or science.

  • We encourage you to apply to the resident application that most aligns with your grade level preference. Primary residents work in grades PreK3-4th grade and secondary residents work in grades 5th-12th. Through our interview process you will get to interview directly with schools.

  • While we accept applications on a rolling basis, we encourage all applicants to apply to the earliest possible deadline. We are actively filling our resident positions through the year.

  • To earn a Master of Arts in Teaching degree, at no cost you must complete all three years of the secondary Capital Teaching Residency commitment.  Year two tuition is paid out-of-pocket and individuals will have the opportunity to secure federal loans or set up a payment plan. Upon successful completion of the three-year commitment, year two tuition costs will be reimbursed by KIPP DC.
