Wie ist Herr von Ribbeck gestorben?Jahrhundert. Hans - Georg von Ribbeck war freundlich zu den "Bauern und Büdnern" und ver¬schenkte Mittags gerne Birnen an die Kinder des Dorfs. Er starb 1759 im hohen Alter und erbat angesichts seines knauserigen Sohnes listig eine Birne mit ins Grab.

Dieser bekannteste Birnbaum der Literaturgeschichte hat Ribbeck in der Mark Brandenburg, 30 Kilometer westlich von Berlin, berühmt gemacht. In dem kleinen Ort dreht sich heute alles um die Birne.
Was passiert in der Ballade Herr von Ribbeck?Fontane erzählt die Geschichte des freigiebigen Herrn von Ribbeck auf Ribbeck im Havelland. Dieser verschenkt die Birnen des Baumes in seinem Garten an vorbeikommende Kinder, die er in märkischem Platt anspricht („Lütt Dirn, kumm man röwer, ick hebb 'ne Birn“). Sein Sohn dagegen ist geizig.
