Four Theories of the Press•In 1956, Fred S. Siebert, Theodore Peterson & WilburSchramm offered four theories of how the press operatesin different political, historical and cultural environmentsof the world.•Although they referred specifically to“the press”, we canextend their theories to embrace all the media of masscommunication, including TV, radio and online. The Authoritarian Theory•The authoritarian theory is the oldest form of masscommunication, with its roots in 16th and 17th centuryEngland.•Government exerts direct control of the mass media.•Countries where government consists of a limited andsmall ruling-class are especially likely to have anauthoritarian media system. •Media act primarily to support the regime’s policies and are notallowed to publish/ broadcast that would undermine thegovernment’s authority.•Content that threatens or challenges the existing political systemand its value is strictly prohibited.•The government uses media to inform the public of events itdetermines should be publicized and to help form public opinionin support of its policies. •Anyone who violates the rules is subject to harsh punishment, includingimprisonment, expulsion or even death.•Media that operate under the authoritarian theory can be either publicly orprivately owned.
