1) Economic marginalization- Free African Americans in the region rarely became collectively associated with economic roles such as artisans and mechanics. In terms of status distinctions, it did not matter very much between slave & free. When white workers occupy those positions, the largely urban and domestic character of northern slavery did little to prefer free over enslaved.

2) Restricted social structure- Free northern Blacks generally lacked opportunity for social mobility that was available in more highly stratified lower South.

3) Community institutions- Free blacks in the North had more autonomy when it came to their churches & associations compared to in the South.
