House Servants: Isolated from slave community in slave quarters. Disproportionately female & fulfilled positions like cooks, maids, butlers, nurses, gardeners. Under constant supervision. High rates of sexual abuse.

Field Slaves: 75% of slaves worked in the field. Worked long hours and under strenuous conditions as result of weather conditions, job type, gender, age. Disproportionately male because certain jobs were for skilled males.

Location: cities and towns. Industrial slavery employed slaves- often in rural areas.

Work: Skilled labor. Urban slaves worked as domestics, washerwomen, waiters, artisans. Men, women, & children worked in textile mills of GA & SC

Free time: When urban slaves were not working for masters, allowed to hire themselves out ***contact with free blacks.

-Thomas Auld: Born a poor man and acquired slaves through marriage. Douglas believed adopted slaveholders were the worst. Auld is inconsistent in his discipline and cowardly in his cruelty

1) Economic marginalization- Free African Americans in the region rarely became collectively associated with economic roles such as artisans and mechanics. In terms of status distinctions, it did not matter very much between slave & free. When white workers occupy those positions, the largely urban and domestic character of northern slavery did little to prefer free over enslaved.

2) Restricted social structure- Free northern Blacks generally lacked opportunity for social mobility that was available in more highly stratified lower South.

3) Community institutions- Free blacks in the North had more autonomy when it came to their churches & associations compared to in the South.
