This book has been crucial to my understanding of Celiac Disease and Wheat Allergy. I know, I know, don't start yelling yet! Celiac Disease is not an allergy. You are preaching to the choir. I love this book because of the clarity of thought and the well presented information in it.

Anyone who has a life threatening disease or allergy can learn from Jennifer's horrendous journey through our medical system. A system that is all too eager to dismiss symptoms and problems that doctors can't immediately or easily resolve. If it can't be diagnosed in a 15 minute visit, it must be all in your head. I've been there and so have some of my friends.

I was told after 59 years of symptoms that doctor's said were contradictory or unrelated (I must be imagining it or lying!), that I have a wheat allergy, verified by testing. I've had many allergy tests and other tests over the decades, but it's the first time anyone told me I was allergic to wheat. The doctor was dismissive to my questions of why is it only showing up now, what do I need to do, etc. You can imagine the rest of my questions. His only advice was "avoid wheat" and he left the room. As far as he was concerned his job was done. I no longer see him.

After removing wheat from my life, no easy task as you already know, my health improved exponentially. I wondered why I still became so ill with nausea, vomiting, joint pain (the list of complaints goes on) for days or weeks and then feel healthy only to start the cycle over again. This book gave me the answer, along with so many other answers. Those Gluten Free isles at the grocery store are not necessarily Gluten Free! I don't know why I was shocked to learn this. I should have known that companies will misuse labels to make money, not caring if people are hurt in the process. Some of the products I was using which proudly displayed "GLUTEN FREE" in huge letters on the front of the package, hid a disclaimer in tiny print on the back, " This product may have been manufactured in a plant which processes wheat products". If it says "May have", you know that it means it definitely was. I hope you find this as disgusting I do. I also understand why I'd start vomiting at 2:00 a.m. (after eating a Gluten Free meal at a restaurant) and have to sleep curled up around the toilet when I'd briefly stop vomiting and keep getting sick all night. Many thanks to all you restaurants who don't care about cross-contamination, or the health of your customers. I have encouraged my friends to not patronize you anymore, you don't get a second chance at trying to destroy my health.

I have one piece of advice for those of you who have "friends" or relatives who feel compelled to try to get you to eat things that they like, but which will make you so very ill. Ask them, "How much arsenic would you like in your coffee or tea? I only used 1/8 of a teaspoon when I made it, but you might like the taste better if you add more". If this doesn't put it in perspective for them, you need to drop them out of your life. Anyone who is comfortable with trying to force you to eat something that makes you ill, is not someone who cares about you.

I eat Gluten Free though I don't have Celiac Disease and only a verified Wheat Allergy because if I don't, I get very sick for a very long time. I have so much respect for all of you who cope with this disease. I have zero respect for anyone who tries to minimize or sabotage your ability to do so.

Finding out I have celiac disease has been a huge roller coaster, but when I read this book I feel at peace and understood. She teaches you to come to terms with your new life as a celiac and puts feelings and thoughts into words you’ve been struggling to find.

For about five years I struggled with a wide range of symptoms, that at the time I had no clue what the cause was. I had been working in a new job for just over a year, and was in the process of planning my wedding when I came down with what ended up being diagnosed by the doc as some form of a sinus infection. I was prescribed antibiotics and sent on my merry way. The problem was my symptoms never seemed to get better, instead they seemed to get worse, primarily in the form of brain fog, and a constant fatigue that I could not shake no matter how many hours I slept. It got so bad that I was experiencing visual disturbances that I eventually learned were referred to as a Migrane with Aura.

A few years ago we read another book entitled "Grain Brain", and that book started to make me realize there could potentially be a link to my symptoms and the ingestion of Gluten, so my husband and I decided to cut back on the amount of gluten we ate. Well needless to say while certain symptoms went away, like the brain fog, others that I had not been experiencing like the digestive discomfort made themselves right at home. It got so bad that I was frequently eating tums to keep my stomach relatively calm.

On a particularly bad day full of horrible joint pain, I found myself searching the internet yet again for more information about symptoms of a gluten reaction. During my quest I came across Jennifer's website, jennifersway.org, and on it she talked about all the struggles she had had for years before finally being diagnosed as Celiac.

As I read her site, I was brought to tears because she explained the very problems I had been dealing with for oh so very long, so I just had to buy her book to find out more. In reading her book, there were so many similarities between hers and my own personal symptoms. She explained what life was like for her growing up, all the way through adult hood until she finally got diagnosed as Celiac. It was from that point forward that I decided to go 100% gluten free, and have never looked back.

I without a doubt loved her book, and highly recommend it to anyone who either may be struggling with gluten issues, or who know someone who is. It is truly an eye opener to those who are naive to this disease, as well as a validation for those of us that deal with various symptoms on a monthly basis that we are not alone in this struggle and its not all just in your mind.

I read this book in 24 hours... just couldn't stop reading it as it it was so good to be reading about Coeliac Disease from the perspective of someone who has lived with it, and has a fantastic knowledge of it. This book should be read by everyone who has Coeliac or thinks they may have it, anyone who is related to, friends or colleagues with, or in a relationship with someone who has this disease. I have Coeliac and I find it so difficult - getting friends and colleagues to comprehend the seriousness of the illness and the fact that a tiny bit of gluten will do me harm... it's soul destroying... I may not have an anaphylactic reaction but the harm is being done and the effects are very real. You are made to feel like a fussy, faddy eater and basically a nuisance. Coeliacs should not be made to feel this way simply for wanting to be well. Jennifer Esposito puts this so well in her story and I thank her for all she is doing to promote awareness of Coeliac Disease. I can't wait to return to New York to visit her bakery.

Like Jennifer I have progressed through life with various symptoms and diagnoses and only recently realised that I am probably suffering from coeliac disease. Like many people I was told that I had a wheat intolerance so I am unable to be tested without suffering for six weeks. After reading this book I passed it to my husband and asked him to read it. He now fully appreciates how I feel and is very supportive. I’m planning to pass it on to a friend whose husband is a fellow sufferer.

Brilliant information on coeliac disease, I think it would be worthwhile for people who have coeliac disease or know someone with coeliac disease to read it. I personally have had a different experience but it still gave me a huge insight into my own disease that I haven’t experienced.

A beautiful read! I haven't even had the book a couple of hours and it's almost finished because I've not been able to put it down!

I'd been following Jennifer's career for years, and when I learnt that she was also suffering from Coeliac I started to follow her on her journey (I can't tell you how many times her recipes have bought me back from the brink!!!). Her words are what so many of us have been through...are going through every day and seeing them there knowing that I'm not alone is a blessing. I hope her strength, brings you strength like it has with me!

I have suffered allergies, skin problems, asthma and intolerances all my life. Read this as was beginning to think I may be coeliac too. I don't think so, but I was shocked to read how Jennifer had suffered, feel quite blessed reference my own health now. A good read in two parts, the first being almost an autobiography, the second of how she realised she had to do it her way. I found it enjoyable and picked up a couple of tips that may prove useful.
